WHAT IS A FIREARMS TRANSFER AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Federal Law: When purchasing a firearm from a retail store or online, you must complete Form 4473 for the U.S. Department of Justice.
- Receiving the Firearm: Once I receive your firearm from the supplier, I will notify you to stop by and complete the necessary paperwork.
- Required ID: You must bring a valid Iowa-issued driver’s license or ID.
- If you have a valid Iowa Permit to Carry or Permit to Purchase:
- The process takes about 10 minutes.
- If you do not have a valid Permit to Carry or Permit to Purchase:
- A background check is required. You cannot leave with the firearm until the background check returns as “Proceed.”
- This typically adds an additional 10 minutes to the process.
- If you have a valid Iowa Permit to Carry or Permit to Purchase:
- Background Check Statuses:
- Researching: May take a few minutes to several minutes.
- Delayed: Could take from several minutes to a few days.
- Denied: If denied, you will not be able to take the firearm. I am required by Federal law to notify the Jasper County Sheriff’s office.
- Pre-Check Recommendation: If you’re unsure whether you can pass the background check, I recommend doing one before purchasing.
- Private Transfers:
- Both the seller and buyer must be present with valid IDs.
- The process follows the same steps as above.
- Transfer Fees:
- No transfer fee if you purchase from RPF Firearms.
- Transfer fees apply (see Transfer Fee breakdown in next section) for firearms purchased elsewhere.
